Public Health Clinic Study Links 'Americanization' And Depression

A survey of 439 U.S. and Mexican-born Latinas seeking maternity and postnatal services at public wellness clinics in San Antonio uncovered elevated levels of depression among the more "Americanized" women, report researchers from The University of Texas School of Public Health and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the most recent online result of the Maternal and Child Health Journal.

"Americanization" or acculturation is the litigate by which immigrants espouse the life style and customs of their host country, and florida key indicators include preferred speech and lieu of birth, lead writer Marivel Davila said. Davila is a graduate pupil at the UT School of Public Health and a quantitative research analyst at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Elevated levels of depression were reported by the women born in the United States, as well as those wHO asked to conduct their interviews in English. Two non-acculturation variables were associated with elevated depression - being unmarried and being pregnant.

"Screening for clinical depression during maternity is authoritative for this population group, given Latinas' high rates of fertility rate and births to individual women, peculiarly among more acculturated U.S.- born Latinas," Davila and her colleagues wrote in the article.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, single motherhood among Latinas in Texas exceeds the national mean. In Texas in 2005, 43 percentage of all Latina births were to single women. Nationally, the overall medium was 37 percent.

"The sample for this study was a low-income universe," Davila aforesaid. "Our conclusions may or may not be different for women in other socioeconomic status (SES) groups. Hence, more research needs to be conducted among Latinas from differing SES groups, including research centering on the role of social support and cultural values/beliefs related to vaginal birth and pregnancy among Latinas."

The women were interviewed in eight family provision clinics and six antenatal clinics of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD) 'tween May and August of 2003. Of the participants, 318 were born in Mexico and 121 in the United States. They were granted the choice of conducting the interview in English or Spanish.

"The higher prevalence rate of depression in Americanized Latina women is of concern in our community as the population demographics clearly indicate a significant rate of growth of this group in their childbearing geezerhood," said Fernando A. Guerra, M.D., director of wellness for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. "Thus, it is important to more intelligibly understand the circumstances that affect their physical and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy so that preventive measures can be initiated. This is critical for the overall health of both the mother and small fry."

Women in the sketch were percentage of the Perinatal Depression Project for Healthy Start, an opening to put up mental health services to pregnant and postpartum women by SAMHD. They were screened for depressive symptoms using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies - Depression (CES-D) Scale, a 20-item, questionnaire intentional to gauge the level of depressive symptoms over the previous week. Women with a score of 21 or greater were classified as having idealistic depressive symptoms.

"Women wHO were US-born were significantly more likely than Mexican-born women to meet the cutoff score (21 on the CES-D scale)," the authors wrote. "Women wHO conducted their interview in English were significantly more likely to express depressive symptoms compared to women who conducted their interview in Spanish."

Davila said symptoms of depression crataegus laevigata include: emotional stress, helplessness, irritability and anger. Symptoms specific to the maternity and postnatal period can include overly intense worries about the baby, and a deficiency of involvement or fear of harming the baby.

Davila's collaborators included: Stephanie L. McFall, Ph.D., an associate professor at the UT School of Public Health San Antonio Regional Campus, and Diana Cheng, M.D., of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The UT School of Public Health San Antonio Regional Campus and the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio Department of Family and Community Medicine collaborated on the study.

The study is titled "Acculturation and Depressive Symptoms Among Pregnant and Postpartum Latinas." The Perinatal Depression Project was supported by the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.

R Kelly Trial: Day Six

A former friend of the alleged victim in the R Kelly. child pornography trial has testified that it is her friend and R&B singer Kelly in the video at the centre of the case.

Under cross-examination in Chicago today (May 21), Simha Jamison, now 24 said she recognised the girl in the tape from a mullet haircut they both had as youngsters. Jamison also confirmed that she and the alleged victim spent time at Kelly??s studio and home, as well as at a gym.

Jamison, whose nickname is ??Punky??, said that sometimes her parents would drive them, others they would take the train or ??bum a ride?. Sometimes they would leave the studio together, others she would leave and her friend would stay behind.

She said Kelly frequently gave her former friend money from $100 to $500 and that the girl had a black Chrysler PT Cruiser the summer before her sophomore year of high school, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Jamison however, admitted she never saw any sexual contact between the alleged victim and Kelly but she said "There were things I wouldn't tell her as I'm sure there were things that she wouldn't tell me."

The sex-tape was shown to jurors yesterday during the first day of testimony in the trial. Kelly??s defense is saying it is not him in the tape, and used a mole on his back as an example of a physical characteristic that does not match the man in the tape.

The video is poor quality, making it difficult to identify the girl and the man on it. The trial continues tomorrow.

Pierce Brosnan - Brosnans Beach Karaoke Concerts Pay Off For Mamma Mia

PIERCE BROSNAN prepared for his musical role in upcoming summer (08) blockbuster MAMMA MIA! by performing to the ocean on the beach near his Kauai, Hawaii retreat.

Too nervous to belt out the Abba songs he performs for the film's soundtrack to friends, family and holidaymakers, the former James Bond hit the shore as the waves were crashing around him - with his iPod.

He tells U.S. magazine Parade, "I walked up and down the coast and sang karaoke to my own voice for about six weeks."

But his beach rehearsals failed to impress when he had to perform in front of producers and castmates for the first time: "I went to New York for the first rehearsals, and I sounded dreadful. I quietly freaked out... and I made a pig's ear of it."

But he refused to give up, went back to Hawaii and worked even harder on hitting the high notes.

He adds, "In the end they liked it so much they added a verse to my big song."

One of the many neo-hippie block bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic naturalized a devout grassroots following on the intensity of changeless touring and a loose, rootsy make of Southern rock informed by jazz and megrims textures. The group's origins dated to 1982, when singer John Bell and guitar player Mike Houser number one began playing together spell attendance college in Athens, GA; when bassist Dave Schools left academia to join the duette the future year, Widespread Panic was officially born. The ring recorded their debut single, "Coco palm Image," in 1986; drummer Todd Nance united soon after, followed by the addition of percussionist Domingo "Gay" Ortiz and eventually keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann.

Widespread Panic released their energetic debut LP, Space Wrangler, in 1988 on the diminutive Landslide label; afterwards respective days of persistent touring, they gestural to major label Capricorn, which issued the group's eponymously highborn sophomore exertion in 1991. Appearances on the 1992 and 1993 H.O.R.D.E. tours greatly expanded their fan base prior to 1993's Everyday, patch 1994's Ain't Life Grand spawned the AOR hits "Aeroplane" and "Can't Get High." After teaming with fellow Georgian Vic Chesnutt to record 1995's Baseball club High a Pallet under the list Brute, Widespread Panic reconvened for the record album Bombs and Butterflies, released in 1997. In the springtime of 1998, the band released Light Fuse, Get Away. Til the Medicine Takes followed a year by and by. Another Joyous Occasion (2000) and Don't Tell the Band (2001) pronounced the band's first albums of the newfangled millennium. Houser was battling genus Cancer and returned menage to Athens, GA, to breathe while guitarist George McConnell stepped in to destination the go. On August 10, 2002, Houser succumbed to complications from pancreatic cancer at the age of 40.

Oliver told the Mirror yesterday: "I am speechless. We have cast iron rules on what any chef can and cannot buy in all Fifteens.

One of the great unsung heroes of jazz singing, Andy Bey is a commanding interpreter of lyrics wHO has a broad vocal image and a large, rich, full voice. Bey enjoys a belittled following that swears by him; still, he isn't near as well known as he should be. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, non far from New York, Bey was open to wind as a baby and started vocalizing in front of local audiences as early as ashcan School. At some gigs, an eight-year-old Bey was accompanied by tenor adolphe Sax great Hank Mobley. Bey was 13 when, in 1952, he recorded his first base solo record album, Mama's Little Boy's Got the Blues; and he was 17 when he formed Andy & the Bey Sisters with his siblings Salome and Geraldine in 1956. The grouping did a 16-month tour of Europe and recorded trey albums (unitary for RCA Victor in 1961, 2 for Prestige in 1964 and 1965) before breakage up in 1967. In the 1960s and seventies, Bey's vocals were featured by Max Roach, Duke Pearson, and Gary Bartz (for whom he delivered very socio-political lyrics, including some searing condemnations of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War). The 1970s as well launch Bey recording Have and Judgment for Atlantic and start a long association with piano player Horace Silver, wHO featured him conspicuously on many of the religious-themed albums he put out have his own Silveto label in the seventies and 1980s. The LPs contained what Silver termed "metaphysical self-help music" and preached a sort of religious self-help doctrine that wasn't unlike Reverend Ike's message -- regrettably for Silver and Bey, this approaching meant limited distribution and minuscule commercial appeal. Bey continued to run with Silver into the 1990s, when he was featured on Silver's 1993 Columbia appointment It's Got to Be Funky (which pronounced a return to concentrated bop's mainstream and did much better commercially than his "self-help medicine"). Labels Bey recorded for as a drawing card in the 1980s and 1990s included Jazzette, Zagreb, and Evidence, which, in 1996, released the superb Ballads, Blues and Bey. The success of Blues, Ballads and Bey entrap a place for the piano player to stretch out a minuscule and explore his more intimate side. Bey followed with Shades of Bey in 1998 and Tuesdays in Chinatown in 2001, choosing to explore outside the earth of jazz with covers of Nick Drake and Milton Nascimento and others. American Song followed in early 2004.
